Types of Expansion Joint Systems
Building expansion joints are classified two ways: by where they sit in the structure (floor, wall, roof, seismic…) and by how they work (metal cover plate, elastomeric seal, foam-sealed, modular). This guide maps both.

By construction / mechanism
Metal cover-plate systems
An aluminium (or stainless / bronze) plate spans the joint over a base frame, sliding or self-centring as the structure moves. Best for large seismic gaps, tamper resistance and flush architectural finishes.
Elastomeric compression seals
A pre-compressed elastomeric profile (EPDM, neoprene) is wedged into the joint and seals by staying in compression. Simple, economical, good for moderate movement.
Cellular-foam / silicone-faced seals
Impregnated open-cell foam faced with silicone bonds to the joint walls with no invasive anchoring — excellent watertightness and ideal for curves, corners and facades.
Membrane / weldable roof seals
A weldable TPE or EPDM seal is heat-welded into the roof waterproofing membrane (PVC/TPO/EPDM) to keep the roof continuous and watertight across the joint.
Bridge & heavy-movement types
For infrastructure: strip-seal, modular (multi-profile), finger and compression-seal deck joints handle very large movements. These are structural, not architectural building joints.
