Fire-Rated Expansion Joints: Ratings, Standards & Selection

Where an expansion joint crosses a fire-rated wall or floor, it must maintain that fire resistance across the moving gap. A fire-rated expansion joint does exactly that — holding a 1–4 hour rating while the structure moves.

Why fire-rated joints matter

Fire compartmentation only works if it is continuous. An unprotected expansion joint is a gap straight through a fire-rated barrier — a path for flame, smoke and heat. A fire-rated joint system seals that gap with fire-resistant materials that stay effective even as the joint opens, closes and shears, preserving the compartment and safe egress.

A fire-rated joint keeps the wall or floor’s fire rating continuous across the moving gap.

How fire-rated joints work

  • Intumescent + silicone systems — a fire-retardant core (which expands under heat) faced with silicone; some also provide a watertight and traffic-durable surface in the same product.
  • Ceramic-fibre blanket systems — mineral blanket with stainless foil and a fire-resistive fabric, mechanically retained; used for larger openings and as smoke barriers.

The best products combine fire resistance with movement (up to ~100% total) and, in some cases, watertightness — all in one assembly.

Choosing a fire-rated joint

  1. Match the joint rating to the rating of the wall or floor it crosses (1–4 hr).
  2. Confirm the test standard accepted by your code (UL 2079 / ASTM E1966 / EN 1366-4).
  3. Check the movement class and maximum joint opening.
  4. Decide if you also need water/air sealing in the same system.
The Dseal system: Dseal PyroBarrier is our fire-rated joint barrier for floor and wall joints, targeting a 2–3 hour rating to UL 2079 / ASTM E1966, with an optional combined watertight-plus-fire variant. PyroBarrier is currently in third-party certification. Comparing an imported fire barrier? See Dseal vs EMSEAL / Balco / MM Systems.

Frequently asked questions

What is a fire-rated expansion joint?

It is an expansion joint system that maintains the fire-resistance rating of the wall or floor it crosses — typically 1 to 4 hours — using fire-resistant materials that stay effective while the joint moves.

What fire rating do I need?

Match the joint’s rating to the rating of the assembly it interrupts. A 2-hour wall needs at least a 2-hour-rated joint, tested to UL 2079 or ASTM E1966.

Can a fire-rated joint also be watertight?

Yes. Some systems combine fire resistance, water sealing and a trafficable surface in a single assembly — useful at fire-rated deck and plaza joints.
