Where an expansion joint crosses a fire-rated wall or floor, it must maintain that fire resistance across the moving gap. A fire-rated expansion joint does exactly that — holding a 1–4 hour rating while the structure moves.
Why fire-rated joints matter
Fire compartmentation only works if it is continuous. An unprotected expansion joint is a gap straight through a fire-rated barrier — a path for flame, smoke and heat. A fire-rated joint system seals that gap with fire-resistant materials that stay effective even as the joint opens, closes and shears, preserving the compartment and safe egress.

How fire-rated joints work
- Intumescent + silicone systems — a fire-retardant core (which expands under heat) faced with silicone; some also provide a watertight and traffic-durable surface in the same product.
- Ceramic-fibre blanket systems — mineral blanket with stainless foil and a fire-resistive fabric, mechanically retained; used for larger openings and as smoke barriers.
The best products combine fire resistance with movement (up to ~100% total) and, in some cases, watertightness — all in one assembly.
